Design Style Series: Bohemian Design
Do you love to travel or collect vintage decor? What’s exciting about Bohemian Design style is the opportunity to be creative with color, pattern, and texture combinations that are unique to you. Layering is recommended and your fabulous vintage finds will be at home in a Bohemian style room. In this blog post, I’ll go into more detail about how to decorate in this design style and reference examples shown in the concept board below.
Patterns & Layers
In other design styles, you may need to be deliberate with the pattern choices to ensure they work together in a space. However with Bohemian style, you can be more daring when it comes to mixing colors and patterns. In fact the more layers, the better! There are fewer rules when it comes to effectively pulling off a design in this style. As a result, the space can feel quite energetic, if using bold colors and patterns, or laid-back if you’re using muted tones. In this mood board, I let the colors carry throughout the space but use a variety of patterns.
Natural Elements
This is my favorite part about Bohemian Design style because I like to bring elements into decor that remind me of places I’ve traveled to, particularly the beach! In addition to items found in nature, woven baskets and woven light fixtures would look great in a Bohemian style room. You could also use furniture made of wicker, like the dresser shown in the image below. And of course, live plants can be incorporated to add even more pattern, texture, and color.
Vintage, Handmade, & Collected Decor
The vintage items that you love are perfectly at home in a Bohemian style room. Also, you could decorate with items that are handmade, or find a space to feature collections from your travels. It’s the personal items that have aged over time or that tell a story, which make a space truly unique. In the mood board above the sofa, is a collection of handwoven baskets that look great displayed as a group and create a nice focal point.
Bold Colors
Just as you can experiment with patterns, try different color combinations in your Bohemian style room! In this mood board, I use oranges, pinks, and blues throughout along with neutral colors and brass accents. Some colors pop more and are more intense, while others are lighter and muted. I drew inspiration for this space from the rugs. This is a simple way to begin when deciding what colors to use in your space - choose a rug that you like or a decor item as your starting point!
